Wilmington Among Best Cities in Nation for Independent Entrepreneurs
Wilmington scored the second slot on NerdWallet's Top 10 Prime Locations for Independent Entrepreneurship. Apparently the Port City and it's outlaying regions are chock full of the right people to support businesses large and small!
183 metropolitan areas were evaluated for this report. Those cities needed to have 15,000 or more businesses, and a population greater than 250,000. Average revenue of businesses, percent of businesses with paid employees, and number of businesses per 100 people were considered; along with median annual income, median annual housing costs, and unemployment rate.
Wilmington was found to have the lowest population on the list (259,815), but the highest volume of businesses (15.1 per 100 persons).
Iric Wexler, of The Cleaning Authority, spoke with Port City Daily about the findings, as well as his own experience in setting up shop in Wilmington. "Wilmington really is a microcosm for so many other markets across the country. It has the college, which is great. It has industry, which is great. It has tourism, which is great. It has students, young professionals, retirees. There is always a danger in being in a market where one type of person is prevalent. But Wilmington has all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds."
Chris Suggs, a small business expert with FranNet, matches would-be frnchisees with suitable companies. Suggs notes that Wilmington has a certain "draw for business owners for its unique demographics and its ability to keep its Southern charm in the midst of continued growth."
NerdWallet declares, "a growing population, strong tourism and proximity to the beach make this port city ideal for businesses."
